Meta Mecha is a personalized and medically compliant prosthetic socket liner that utilizes metamaterial, computational design, and 3D printing. The 3D printable mechanical metamaterials offer customization of the mechanical surfaces, making it easy and economical for users to update their prosthetic liner. Generated based on personalized medical requirements and 3D scanned residual limb data, the metamaterial prosthetic liner is 3D printed with elastic TPU. Meta Mecha offers a unique solution to the prosthetic field, combining computational design, metamaterial, and 3D printing.
The project team consisted of four industrial designers from China: Cai Xuerong, Wu Yanyun, Pan Ruikun, Gonglongyu. After studying at Tongji University's College of Design and Innovation, they are committed to rethinking the future of the design industry through new computer technologies and building on this for sustainable and inclusive design. An educational exhibition based on the Meta Mecha project was shown in Shanghai Dyson Ideation Lab since February 2022. The project was awarded Top8 in 2022 James Dyson Award in China Region.
