The side table is a hommage of the work Abaporu (1928), by Tarsila do Amaral, a great symbol of modernism in Brazil. This is a piece with a challenging design with a strong symbolism supporting it. With a narrative behind its organic forms, alludes to several elements contained in the work of Tarsila. The intention was to recreate the movement with fluid and organic lines, a challenge to the eye of the sense of balance, proportion and with a playful soul. A graceful balance between form and function.
I have had my architecture office for over 12 years, in Rio de Janeiro, focusing on residential projects, and have always had the habit of designing smaller pieces like side tables, coffee tables, etc. Two years ago I had my first daughter and decided to take a change of direction towards design, with the idea that I would be more available for my family. I launched the first 5 pieces of the Great Artists Collection, inspired by iconic works of great artists of the early 20th century such as Tarsila do Amaral, Matisse and Van Gogh. To my surprise the collection gained a projection that I did not expect: several national and international publications, my participation in Maison&Objet with a subsequent publication in Le Figaro, the awarding of the Good Design Award for Sertão Side Table in the furniture category, and a very incredible acceptance. My main goal is to try to "capture" the essence of each of these works and transform them into a piece with that soul. I understand that this, together with the technical knowledge of architecture, to be my greatest asset.
