| STATEMENT OF ART: Design is, at its core, problem-solving with an aesthetic dimension. It’s about creating functional solutions that are not only practical but also visually pleasing and effective in communicating a message. Whether in product design, graphic design, architecture, or user interface design, the purpose is often to enhance the experience of the user or viewer. Good design is intentional and strategic—it considers not just beauty but also accessibility, usability, and impact. For example, a well-designed website is both easy to navigate and visually engaging, while also serving the practical function of delivering information or facilitating an action. Design, in this way, often blends form and function seamlessly, working in harmony to serve a specific need. Art, on the other hand, tends to be more about expression, exploration, and emotional connection. It can be deeply personal, abstract, or even confrontational. Art doesn’t have to be “useful” in the conventional sense—it is often about provoking thought, evoking emotion, or exploring ideas in ways that don’t necessarily have a defined end goal beyond personal or collective reflection. Art can be free from the constraints of functionality, and it’s often about breaking the rules, challenging conventions, and finding new ways to communicate complex ideas. It’s about creating something that resonates, whether that’s through color, form, texture, or concept. An artwork’s value might come from its ability to make the viewer feel something, think about something differently, or see the world in a new light. Where design and art meet is a fascinating place. Designers often pull from art to inspire their work, and artists can sometimes take on aspects of design to make their work more communicative or impactful. For instance, branding is an area where art meets design; a logo or visual identity is artistic, yet it is designed to communicate a clear, functional message about a brand. Similarly, public installations or conceptual art often require design thinking to ensure they are engaging with the public effectively. In the end, I think both design and art are about telling stories, sparking conversations, and adding meaning to the world. They make the invisible visible and invite us to reflect on both the world around us and our own inner lives.
