Design always needs functionality, while art only has to exist. Designs have to solve problems, while art should provoke thought and emotions. Designers work methodically with a data-driven or mathematical process, while artists work intuitively using their instincts. Art is perceptual, while design is rational. Art Thinking' and 'Design Thinking' can be utilized together. Design thinking can focus on making the 'created' product better, more useable, culturally acceptable, and manufacturable, while art thinking can focus on creating original ideas without productivity restrictions.
