About Naoya Katagami : Naoya Katagami is a visual designer and photographer based in Hiroshima, Japan. Working across poster design and monochrome film photography, his practice explores how visual language can articulate emotional depth and distill complex realities. Katagami focuses on expressing essential truths through form, contrast, and silence—pursuing clarity without simplification. His work has been recognized by international design institutions and featured in exhibitions that explore social narratives and visual culture.
STATEMENT OF ART:
Design, for me, is a language that doesn’t ask for attention—it listens first. It is a process of distillation, of peeling back layers to reveal what matters. I do not design to decorate, but to uncover, to echo what is already there in silence. Art and design both begin with a question: what does this moment, this message, or this memory want to become?
I work primarily through visual communication and monochrome film photography. These mediums allow me to reduce noise and focus on contrast—of tone, of time, of thought. I am drawn to the stillness of analog processes, to the imperfection and permanence they offer. In particular, I am fascinated by monochrome negative film, not only for its aesthetic but for its material honesty—how silver is formed through a chemical reaction and fixed onto the surface. Each image is not just a record, but a physical transformation, where light becomes substance.
My practice is rooted in the belief that clarity is not the absence of complexity, but the understanding of it. I aim to design not what is visible, but what becomes visible when we truly look. In that sense, design is not just visual—it is relational. It connects image to emotion, text to rhythm, form to the human need for meaning.
I do not think of design as solution-making, but as perspective-building. I am less interested in convincing, and more interested in witnessing—offering space for people to recognize something they already carry within. This might take the shape of a poster, a phrase, a quiet photograph. What matters is that it speaks in ways I cannot with words.
My role is not to impress, but to express the essential. I design to draw out the unseen, to listen through form, and to allow each project to ask its own questions.
Motto: Draw silence. Design echo.
