Patrizia Dottori, from Rome, lives and works between Buenos Aires and Rome, where she began photographing in 1986. Her training, professional and cultural background has led her to deal with politics and law. Right from the start, she has developed a personal approach to photography with the intent to analyze a variety of topics, explored following a clear common thread, with the final result of a unique and original look in combining artistic expression and political commitment.
Shooting like an artist and thinking like a photographer, she defines her photographic genre as "artistic reportage", a search through meanings and emotions of not immediately recognizable realities. The photographic projects carried out so far deal with inevitable themes in an effort towards a better world, from the condition of women to environmental issues, from History with a capital letter (as in the monumental work dedicated to Cuba) to the many individual stories that are the real objective of the artist in her countless travels: the reportage is actually the result of the search for an encounter with the other.
Even in the ongoing introspective analysis, which involves the study of psychoanalysis applied to creativity, from which an original production of the self-portrait genre (PatIsHere) springs, leading, later, to the experience of hypnosis (from which she has drawn her latest cycle of works Sentidos Revelados), the artist shows all her urgency to deal with the body, first of all her own, as a preparatory approach to dedicate herself to the body of the other, to which she restores a presence that combines beauty, always pursued with tenacity, submitting emotions and visions to her photo-descriptive yearning.
The natural vocation to search for the deep meaning of events and personalities, so evident in the choice of the subjects chosen and places visited, is further confirmed by the techniques adopted, in particular the use of negative printing through which the artist is able to see the hidden side of things, so as to provide them with new meanings. Emblematic from this point of view are the works on environmental issues, in particular the project on the Perito Moreno glacier, in which the negative print becomes a sort of warning against the risk of destruction of the planet, as well as the works collected in Mother&land. Thanks to her mastery of the printing techniques, the artist has been able to ensure artistic and qualitative continuity of her work in the transition from the black and white of her beginnings to color and especially in the transition from analog to digital, mixing knowledge and experience in a balanced way.
Wherever the artist perceives the danger of human, civil, social and environmental rights being questioned or jeopardized, that is where her projects start, directly from photographs. Inspired by Magritte for his surrealist and metaphysical approach, by Man Ray, for his experimentation and research, by Ansel Adams for his rigor and poetry, she attaches a very important role to beauty, often pursued by transforming reality into surreal images or abstract forms through a critical and analytical look at reality, which does not leave behind anything that really matters from a human and social point of view.
