The artist is commited to her/his feelings. A piece of art is something that touches the observer in some way, bringing up different feelings. As for a designer, the starting point is usually a particular need, sometimes a need to solve a problem. She/he is committed to communicate something to a specific audience through the product. However, I believe that sometimes a designer can be an artist when he/she is able to establish an emotional bond with the viewer.
