At all times, at the core of her work, is a tribute to the raw and unadulterated beauty of the Earth’s materials and the impressive effects of time, pressure, erosion, fire and light. All of her work pays homage to the duality of nature; the dark and the light, decay and growth; balanced and complimentary opposites within a greater whole. Sunny Jackson is an independent design/art brand led by Artist and Landscape Architect, Sunny Jackson. Sunny Jackson creates functional mood lighting that doubles as sculptural art. Her signature crystal light sculptures provide a unique, sophisticated and timeless fixture for a variety of wellness spaces and clientele including hotels, private residences, spas, offices, restaurants, yoga centers, and boutiques across the globe. Each piece is artisinally handcrafted, wherein the materials and techniques used are of the highest quality with a focus on sustainably sourced materials and practices. BIOGRAPHY Sunny received a degree in Landscape Architecture from Arizona State University in 2002 and has designed and worked on luxury resorts and residences across the world. Her experiences have helped her to develop an in-depth understanding and appreciation of beautiful design in some of the world’s most stunning environments. When combined with her upbringing on an Iowa farm and summers in Yellowstone National Park, she has been able to fuse her training and observations of nature into an expression of art that is evidenced in her current work. ORIGINS & INSPIRATION So much of our built environment is made of man-made materials which are, by in large, a detachment from nature and our connection to the Earth. The furnishings and objects within the spaces we occupy are usually so altered from their original source that there is essentially no semblance of nature left. It is important to bring people back to these origins. Hence, the Grain and Fire Portal Light was conceived and is meant to showcase the raw materials from which it is made and highlight the perfect design of nature in its original form and beauty. Most people are amazed to learn that quartz crystals are formed this way naturally and have not been altered or polished from their original state. It is also noteworthy that they are around 280 million years old and grow deep within the Earth. The wood too was chosen especially to highlight the process of time and erosion with centuries old wood finishing techniques including the shou sugi ban method of charring wood with fire as a means of preservation. So with nature as the palette and the muse, a novel and contemporary light sculpture was conceived. The Yin and Yang philosophy of seemingly opposite forces that are actually interconnected and interdependent of one another was of particular interest in how this design was conceived and consequently how it evolved. By taking something that was decaying and returning back to the Earth and inlaying it with something light and naturally prismatic such as the quartz crystal, a yin and yang effect was created. It was the juxtaposition of these materials, the tree and the crystal; both born of the same Earth; yet sharply contrasting in texture, form and material that made the marriage complete. Comprised of wood and quartz crystal, each organic crystal light sculpture uses sustainably sourced wood from a reserve stock of aged Teak wood, circa 1930s. Weathered for decades by the sun, wind, and rain, the wood is then hand shaped, sanded, burnt and finished into a vessel for holding LED lighting and using quartz crystals as a natural diffuser and light absorber. The finished result is art in the form of functional and calm mood lighting.
