Traditional techniques are taken from their original context and applied in daring new ways to generate designs that are distinctive and fresh. The designs are luxurious without being fussy – they pair beautiful hardwood timbers with elegantly sweeping ash frames to deliver high impact furniture. The work captures the overall lightness of the Scandinavian style, while celebrating the rich colour and intensity of American and African hardwoods.
Good design incorporates wonderful artistry. Good design delivers both beauty and function, so that form and function become one. In great design the functional requirement does not necessarily constrain the aesthetic; but the design must fully meet the functional needs, so that the user feels well-served and enriched. Art is a medium for contemplation that provokes some form of reaction; good design should also engage the user or observer in a similar way, and it must also meet the practical objectives.
Furniture design does not necessarily start at either the aesthetic artful end, or at the pragmatic ergonomic end of the equation. The design process can commence anywhere in this space. Often the design journey is holistic and prompted by a question, such as ‘could one imagine a single solid hardwood shell that forms both the seat and armrest?’ The question then prompts ideas that are both simultaneously aesthetic and ergonomic in nature. Invariably it seems that the more thought is that is given to the design, to simplify and streamline the components and lines, the more scope there is for a beautiful rendition of the whole. Good furniture design must be supremely comfortable for the user, and wonderfully comforting to the eye and soul.
