View Larger Image and Additional Photos of Mariel Nina LazoAbout Mariel Nina Lazo : Mariel Nina Z. Lazo is a furniture designer based in Manila, Philippines. Growing up in a family of doctors, she knew she was different because she wanted to be a carpenter - a dream she told her friends during her teen years. In 2008, she pursued her dream and studied industrial design at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, California, USA. She uses paper and cutter as her main design tools making it easier for her to come up with ideas and be able to create a variety of form and function.
For me, there is value in understanding standards in art and design while simultaneously recreating it. In this way, I am able to make something both useful and beautiful while redefining boundaries or even breaking them altogether. This is something one can see in my creative process. I use basic elements and play around with them until something entirely new comes out of this reinvention of the old. My core belief about art and design comes out of this concept of reinvention—how an entirely new work is almost always born out of inspiration from another work. Perhaps, this is why I do what I do, why I design and define things—I would want to be part of the codependent universe of art where one inspires another, where everyone inspires each other.
