About Xander Bremer : Xander Bremer is a San Francisco-based designer. His experience in mechanical engineering, art, architecture, and fabrication is the basis for a holistic approach to design that can approach a problem from many angles. In all his work, the supporting physics, structures, mechanisms, and materials are pulled to the fore and celebrated. The result is simplified, iconic forms that become the voice for a philosophy in which living simply lives makes us richer. STATEMENT OF ART:Xander studied at Stanford University’s Joint Program in Design – a 50-year old, interdisciplinary master’s program between art and engineering. Previously, he earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University in New York City. Xander has worked for Apple in manufacturing in Shanghai, China, designed kinetic architecture with Olson Kundig Architects in Seattle, WA, and started a business in Brooklyn, NY repairing high-end carbon fiber racing bicycles. He also spent five years racing road bicycles professionally from Vermont to California, and spent a season living and training in Bruges, Belgium while racing in Europe. In my work I unite contradictory elements to create meaning: equilibrium through imbalance, unity through contrast, art through math, and the practical from the impossible. These are conceptual bridges. Many of the tools I use are very modern, such as 3-D computer modeling, CNC machining, and TIG welding. But I’m always seeking to root these in something more fundamental – an ancient process, an intrinsic human need, traditional materials, the intimacy of craft – a human mark. These are methodological bridges. The physical objects I create are always meant to be a bridge across these boundaries to explore cultural dichotomies between mind and body, man and nature, man and machine, order and chaos, past and future.
