STATEMENT OF ART: I am lucky because I am a person that sits in the center. I sit in between art and technology, between right brain and left brain, and between being creative and analytical. I have not had to choose – rather, I have had the opportunity to live my life as both artist and “practical-ist”. I am a creative thinker that works in the technology industry – and that has given me a perspective that is very different than if I were more specialized. To me, design works best when design takes into account the same practices that we consider to be integral in my world of technology development. In the world of technology, as shown through wildly successful products like those at Apple, Inc., form, function, and user experience are paramount. The form must inspire and make sense in how it looks and feels to the user. Function drives home that whatever the entity was built to do - whether inspiring emotion (like sculpture) or allowing you to effortlessly connect to the world wide web (like a personal computer) - the object must do it well. User experience principles such as designing/developing products that are intuitive, simple, and pleasurable are key to design. Intuitive design means taking the time to understand the underlying problem before trying to solve it – and truly understanding the answer to the question “why?”. We must take the time to solve the right problem. User experience is about designing products that are easy to use, easy to learn, easy to find, and easy to integrate – by truly putting in the time to create in a way that does not burden others. At the end of it all, everything is created for and consumed by a human being: art, processes, products, and technology. Everything. In order to create for a better future, we must all take a human-centric and holistic view to the world of design.
