Interview with Ashley L. Williams at Friday 25th of September 2020 FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? ALW: When I first started out, I was doing all of my designs in one go. No sketching, research, or redrawing. Now, I've developed a system: Step 1: Do warm-up squilly drawings. Step 2: Look up facial expressions and mouths either on Google or in one of my books Step 3: Create a shape and then make a character based on an expression that caught my eye. Step 4: Color it in using either markers or paint. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? ALW: When it comes to traditional art, I use pencil, pens, markers, acrylic paint, paper, and canvas. As for digital art, I use programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and Google SketchUp. FS: What was your most important job experience? ALW: Even though this job has nothing to do with art, I would say Starbucks. I say this because it's more than just brewing coffee all day. During my time there, I learned how to help customers who have never set foot into the store before to figure out what drink they might want. I start by asking them questions about things such as preferences towards taste, temperature, and even caffeine levels. I apply those same skills whenever I have clients who are also unsure as to what they want but still allow me to use my expertise to help bring their ideas to life. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? ALW: What I want to do is create a series with my drawings. Right now, I have one book that is out and I will have a second one printed out October 2nd, 2020. When I first started doing these, I was only doing them as a form of a exercise just to keep my hand moving. But the more that draw and the more that people react to them, the more that I see potential to do more with them. The way that I see it, I can use these characters as a ways to bring much needed awareness to emotional intelligence and mental health because I have noticed that these things have been overlooked for far too long and are only brought up when something horrible happens and it's too late to fix anything. I want to try and change the attitude towards how people think about their feelings which hopefully can be passed down the upcoming generation. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? ALW: I do everything all by myself! The artwork, the marketing, and finances, the planning, everything! FS: How can people contact you? ALW: Feel free to text me at 404-561-1142 or email me at williamaashley@yahoo.com.
