Interview with Gerardo Marcelo at Monday 5th of April 2021 ![]() FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? GM: I always wanted to create new things, since I was a kid I would always play with playmobil and build rollercoasters our of cardboard, and later when grew up got very interested in anything involving crafts and arts, so ended up enrolling at a product design degree. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? GM: Mugo Ceramica is always a playful space, we are always trying to get inspired by nature and playing with the features of the materials. I think in a way we want to honour animals in our very personal way. FS: What is "design" for you? GM: I always see design as an expressive way to communicate with others through objects. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? GM: I am more focused on Concept design and Aesthetical and Symbolic design FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? GM: I designed a set of finger puppets for the Puppet Company in the UK I loved that project because Peter the director let me play a lot with textures colours and the pupepts themselves. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? GM: I love ceramics because of the way the material lets you work with it and the shapes combined with the grazes are unlimited, I love working with wood but I’m just not that good :( FS: When do you feel the most creative? GM: The times I feel more creative are when stop thinking and start observing whats infront of me; could be sounds, shapes, living beings, textures etc… it is funny how everything is always trying to tell us something and shouting us ideas I think we just need to listen to them FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? GM: Mostly aesthetics and the symbolism behind everything I create, I honestly don’t think is the best way to do it, and it always sets me back a little when validating every design but I love how it ends up in something really authentic. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? GM: I generally feel every possible emotion; excitement and hope when starting the brainstorms to frustration and anger when the things don’t work as expected and relief when and satisfaction when manage to face those little issues, or could be on the contrary a bit of disappointment when everything goes wrong. However, I am massively lucky my family and friends are always there to tell me stuff like ‘no worries, I’ll get you a beer…’ FS: What makes a design successful? GM: I think loads of previous failures and the work sorting them out. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? GM: I don’t think there are good or bad designs I just think there are coherent or incoherent designs depending on the context. It is like building the perfect racing car for a yacht race FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? GM: I believe not only designers but humanity, in general, have the commitment to look after the environment, designers specifically can do it by bearing in mind materials, processes, ou rproposal sustainability, and even the business model of our product. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? GM: Design reflects society feelings as it has shown through history, last decades have been characterized by a consumerism culture and an encouraging of selfishness in people and as a result; new generations are tending to be the opposite, therefore; designers should think in long-lasting products and push for a more cooperative society through design. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? GM: Last October 2020 at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MUNAL, Mex City) as part of the Abierto Mexicano de Diseño, but after this Pandemic, I reckon we need to either make museums even more accessible for people or exhibit in open spaces where interested people can experience our proposals FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? GM: I think by observing and trying to listen to everything; people, nature, objects themselves, and always bringing a notebook with me to draw or write stuff. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? GM: I think it is always changing through time, now it is more focused on playful symbolism and aesthetics. I want to promote this togetherness between people and nature by playing with ceramics and the infinite possibilities it offers.
