Interview with Andrea Escudé at Monday 18th of March 2019 ![]() FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? AE: Since I was young, I was attracted towards all art forms and always enjoyed drawing as well making and repairing objects. My interest in arts and design prompted me to attend the Brera High School which has a strong reputation for the fine arts, especially painting, and art history. While in high school I attended a weekly workshop at Cretachepassione at the historical Curti furnaces in Milan to work with clay for modeling and decorating cotto. In the last years of high school I realized that design is my real interest. I then decided to study for a B.A in Interior Design at the School of Design of the Politecnico in Milan. I focused my coursework and projects on collective spaces and renovation of areas. I was attracted on the one hand by the most pure aspects of Design, motivated by its elegance, while on the other hand I was looking for something that would directly relate to human behaviour, group interactions and welfare. My second area of interest, design and social interactions, was more difficult to integrate with the core of my studies. I discussed my interests at length with students and professors focusing on the changing cultural diversity in Italian cities. FS: What is "design" for you? AE: I find it fascinating to explore shapes and materials that lead to the creation of a new experience for a group of people who interact within a collective space, especially in the context of an urban society. I am also captivated by the power that design has in shaping individual behavior and also in changing the means of communication between human beings.
