Interview with Adauta at Wednesday 18th of October 2023 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? A: António Adauta started his handcraft activity in 1990 while in Coimbra as student re-discovered the Conímbriga´s mosaics. Once he masters the Arraiolos stitch technique, he built a new product – Quadros a Ponto de Arraiolos – (Arraiolos stitch framed handmade embroidery). To do that he made an adaptation of the mosaics patterns to Arraiolos stitch, using innovating materials specially thought for the purpose. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? A: It is only me. I am the designer and mostly the master artisan. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? A: Adaptation of the Roman mosaics patterns to Arraiolos stitch embroidery. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? A: Minotauro® FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? A: Arraiolos stitch, cotton string and quadrilé. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? A: I am happy handcrafting. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? A: Joy. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? A: Last summer at National Handcrafter Fair in Vila do Conde. My next exhibithion will be INTERDECORAÇÃO 2024 in February in Oporto. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? A: Roman mosaics of Conimbriga. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? A: Unique. I explore this style because the result is beautiful. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? A: Viseu - Portugal. The cultural heritage of my country affects my designs once I use a technique from the XVI Century. Pros - In Portugal the handcraft still is very aprreciated . Cons - low incame ... FS: How do you work with companies? A: I do not. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? A: Firstly trough “on site” observation I selected the mosaics and made a chromatic study with the propose to reproduce as faithful as possible the real coulors of the mosaics. Secondly – based on photos and posters of the chosen mosaics- I made the master patterns of witch one, making possible to be worked in Arraiolos stitch. Finally - I handwork the embroideries with the delicate task of reproducing stitch working faithfully resembling the tesserae of the original mosaics. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? A: My 5 Quadros on the wall. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? A: I wake up early, cycle for an hour then I spend the morning doing administrative work in front of the computer. In the afternoon after a siesta I do the artisan work. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? A: Trust in your design and try and try and ... FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? A: Design new Quadros from Conimbriga or somewhere else in " Roman empire ". FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? A: Only me. FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about? A: Now I am handcraft Quadros to apply to design and craft awards. FS: How can people contact you? Design came out of a need to try to do new Quadros.
