DESIGN NAME: Crown of St Barths
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Show House
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the unpretentious Caribbean lifestyle, designers transform this 2200 square feet three storeys detached house into a work that marries modern luxury with nature.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The beauty of renowned tropical paradise St. Barths is a new property project in Hong Kong. It will be a second home for a privileged family of four with the couple in their 50s and two young adults and will provide a perfect escape from their hectic city lifestyle. Nature is a key design element of the house. The design needs to reflect an honest yet luxurious style, with the incorporation of nature as a key element in an understated manner.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Every detail of design is intended to accentuate an honest yet luxurious style, with the incorporation of nature as a key element in an understated manner. This elaborate house features three floors, a foyer area and a generous dining area next to the living room. Two sliding panels in the living room open up to a generous outer garden area. Stairs in the living room lead to the upstairs hall-way which branches off into the deluxe master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, and ensuite 2 and 3. Each has its own style while giving cohesiveness to the design. The third floor, which is the open roof-top space where residents can enjoy the fresh sea air, offers a magnificent view of the bay.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2018 in Hong Kong and finished in June 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Nature is a key design element of the house. A plush rug, reminiscent of cumulus clouds, has been chosen as the main focal point of the living area. The blue-white mottled rug off-sets the luxurious marble floor, creating a rippling effect across the living room that extends into the dining area. This cohesive design feature provides harmony throughout the down-stairs space.
The way each space leads into another is intended to replicate the constant flow of water, akin to “feng-shui”, welcoming the good energy that flows throughout the house.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Owing to the beauty of the surrounding landscape, the clients would like to incorporate the idea of natural aesthetic into the design paired with modern luxury. The designer has naturally selected the sea and sky as their inspiration and successfully incorporates its flow and amorphous form together with the contrast between light and shadow into different areas of the house while maintaining cohesiveness throughout.
CHALLENGE: Not only did the ingenious choice of elegant and timeless pieces of furniture add an understated sense of luxury to the house but the designers have also been keen to pay homage to the original concept by including aquatic elements. The final product is refreshing yet functional, and aligns with the client's vision of a haven within a hectic city where they can relax but also maintain an active social life.
