DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Relio

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Transformable Lamp

INSPIRATION:
My passions - modularity and openness - are the inspiration for Relio. Modularity, because I wanted to create a professional instrument able to transform into various shapes to cover as many functions as possible. Openness, because many parts of Relio are released as 3D-printable Open-Source files, so anyone can expand Relio's functionality and customize it for every need. These features make Relio able to withstand years and years of intense usage, while keeping high repairability and upgradeability scores. The best of both worlds!

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Relio 2020 Editions are professional lamps for Arts and Sciences. They are portable, transformable and modular, and can take different shapes to accomodate a variety of usages, from Cinema, to Painting, to School and Medical laboratories. Many parts are 3D-printed and open-source, to allow anyone to expand Relio's functionalty without limits. Relio's light is engineered to be identical to natural Sunlight, allowing a Professional to work under ideal lighting conditions wherever he goes.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Relio is a professional lamp that mimics sunlight. A series of modular parts combine together to form a tiny, powerful light source that can either become a desktop lamp, a wall lamp, a ceiling lamp or a professional photographic instrument. Magnets, metals and 3D-printable add-on accessories are the core of its modularity.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in 2017 in Brescia, Italy. Final prototypes were ready in 2019. In early 2020, Relio 2020 was presented to the market and quickly sold-out its initial production batch.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The modular shell is entirely made of aluminum and premium-grade stainless steel, machined in the hills of Northern Italy. A protective layer of aerospatial aluminum oxide protects these metal surfaces from scuff marks and deep scratches. The outer carrying box is made of recycled wood, machined and assembled here in Italy. The magnetic stand is made of powerful neodymium rare-earth magnets made in Japan.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Outer case 30 x 10 x 10cm, 2Kg. Inner modular structure is a mere 85 x 85mm, weighing just 600g. It's powered by a ubiquitous USB port, so it can be used everywhere and also with portable USB power banks, for extreme mobility.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Historically, professional and scientific instruments are engineered without too much attention to their design. In this project, I wanted to embrace the design rules that usually apply to consumer products (modularity, simplicity and minimalism) to create a professional device that is both easy to use and easy to repair. This approach resulted in a robust and maintainable product. A core requirement for professional tools!

CHALLENGE:
You can make beautiful, robust and well-thought products, but if the end price is too high, very few people will be able to experience them. So, the biggest challenge and successful achievement for this project was to keep prices low despite the use of premium materials and while keeping 100% of manufacturing here in Italy.
