DESIGN NAME:
Lagoon

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Modular Office Furniture

INSPIRATION:
The design phase started with the research that led to the categorization of activities of an employee throughout the day. Solutions were investigated to best cater to these activities. Also, the furniture set aims to create a motivational atmosphere inside the office since users raised the issue of depressing offices during interviews. The main inspiration source was the fluid dynamism in an office and the possibility of redefining office spaces according to contemporary practices.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Lagoon is a modular furniture set designed for open-plan offices, adaptable to changing environments. The design allows for different levels of privacy and changing group sizes. Combinations are short gatherings, brief discussions, breakout zone and private meetings. But users can combine modules according to their specific needs. The design is modular, reproducible and allows for integration of technological devices. The main module also acts as an aesthetic piece to elevate the office mood

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Lagoon has predetermined combinations among which the customer can choose. These alternatives are for short gatherings, brief discussions, breakout zones, and private meetings. Customers can also customize their combination suited for their office's needs. After the module's installation, employees can integrate their technological appliances with Lagoon. As the office needs a shift, employees can demount the modules and install them in a new combination. By responding to the custom needs of each work environment, Lagoon differentiated from other office furniture.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2018 in Ankara and finished in June 2018 Ankara.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Qualitative and quantitative methods were used. Objective was to see how users adapt to their work environments. Methodology included semi-structured interview, online survey, cultural probe and shadowing. Mood, social, physical and work related needs were raised so Lagoon emphasizes psychological needs as well. Office is defined as a multi branched environment including focusing, socializing, relaxing and working, which defined the modules. The probe showed what is seen depressing so Lagoon became an architectural piece that stands out.

CHALLENGE:
One of the greatest challenges during the design of Lagoon was related to nature of open plan offices, which is to maintain privacy when needed. The level of privacy affects an employees concentration and thus reflects itself of the quality of the work. Each action in a work day calls for different needs and require various levels of privacy. The apparatus parts were designed in the light of this consideration. The suggested combinations were also shaped by the foreseen needs of most common actions in a workspace.
