DESIGN NAME: Maher Ashram
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Orphanage
INSPIRATION: There are 70 millions orphans living in extreme poverty on streets in Asia ,that's the entire population of the United Kingdom.Orphan children, are forced to spend their life under the sky. After visiting other social buildings around,we could sense the same pattern of dim passages running over each other & lack of natural light & ventilation. Our challenge was to break these introvert spaces and create more welcoming atmosphere where these children could enjoy every season in and out.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We intended to adopt a courtyard for an urban context that combines the spirit of traditional houses yet responds to the contemporary values & issues. So, all the functional activities were planned around the central courtyard that would facilitate the light and ventilation.
We have tried to maintain an attunement with the surroundings, striking a harmonious chord by employing locally available technology and material wherever possible.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The plan is developed on 750 mm grid which is derived to accommodate the entire building components. The section generated is a Ground+2 structure with careful considerations of different activities being played out at multiple levels. We enter the building through the ceremonial courtyard, where the building reveals itself to us. The curvilinear colored walls accentuates the spatiality while harmoniously carving out a place of its own.The staircase has been placed strategically on the east to block the neighborhood & to borrow the landscape from the west side which covers the scenic mountains.
The view of people towards these orphans vary a lot. Somewhere we feel architecture has the power to change the perspective and fill the gap between orphans and the society, So we intend to open up the entire ground floor as a public space for society intervention with the children so that they can get along & grow with them. This will
definitely aid to diminish their mental & physical trauma, as & when they will be treated as one amongst themselves.
Inspired from the traditional Indian culture , we wanted this project to be a 'HOME' to these little children which would act as a container of both emotions and memories. It was meant to foster the dreams and reverie, innovations and playfulness.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in October 2018 and finished in May 2019, total 8 Months project duration and the building is located in Satara, Maharashtra, India, and was exhibited in major cities in India. Also this project has won many prestigious awards and recognitions.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The site is surrounded by the rural neighborhood on east ,west & north side and agricultural field on the south side. The proposed site was very tight & small parcel of land as compared to the design programme with a budget constraint.
Our thought process & climatical analysis helped us develop a building mass which was split into two, separated with a central court.
The sun path study & respecting the clients brief of complete privacy from the
surrounding as the building aimed to accommodate female street children, we created 275 mm thick cavity walls to block the east-west sun. Which ultimately also served our purpose to avoid any openings on the either side. This opened up the building on the north -south axis.
The staircase has been placed strategically on the east to block the neighborhood & to borrow the landscape from the west side which covers the scenic mountains.

CHALLENGE: Maher trust approached us to build an orphanage (ashram) for destitute girls in Satara, Maharashtra, India where they could stay, learn, eat and get the quality of life which otherwise they would have been deprived of. After visiting other social buildings around, we could sense the same pattern of dim passages running over each other & lack of natural light & ventilation. Our challenge was to break these introvert spaces and create more welcoming atmosphere where these children could enjoy every season in and out , within the budget constraint though.
