DESIGN NAME: Pop Up Magazine
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Opening Title
INSPIRATION: The idea for this project was to create a contemplative piece to watch.
We wanted to transform the scene, show different perspectives and new paths.
We were inspired by minimal and clean shapes, like doors and eyes, but for the most part, abstract forms. In the animation, we were looking for organic and smooth transitions, morphing all the time.
The design, animation, and music were synced in perfect harmony, leading a poetic flow for the entire piece.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Escaping a room, escaping work, city, nature, escaping a mindset, identity, escaping from your past and future? Escape was the theme chosen for 2019, it takes on different meanings and interpretations, from playful to serious. The project was a journey to explore escape issues in abstract ways. This ride suggests to escape all the time, but at the same time, we are opening doors to discover something new, out of our comfort zone and learning from that.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Keyframes interpolation was used in some situations, basically, you define point A and B, and the software creates the in-between. For cel animation, you draw every frame, using the animation principles.
The project was done in 12 frames per second, so the piece looks more craft hand and less digital.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2019, I was based in Los Angeles, and Annie based in San Francisco, and the exhibition started in California in September 2019.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Movie, Video and Animation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The project was done 100% Digital. For Animation, I mixed cel animation techniques with keyframes interpolations, done with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: We did variations for the delivery: 1 minute piece, 1 bumper of 10 seconds and 3 bumpers of 3 seconds. All done in fullHD 1920 x 1080 pixels.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I did a narrative review of the relationship between the concept ''escape039;' and the stories from the contributors, so me and Annie, Art director from Pop-Up magazine, did some sketches and collected examples from all stories, like, escape from a situation, from the city, from nature, etc.. with all ideas selected, we started to produce the piece.
CHALLENGE: The only challenge here was in the creative process, how to create an abstract piece in 1 minute and keep the storytelling making sense. So was divided by introduction, with the doors opening, (which can be interpreted as ''escaping''), then presenting the main character, in a shape of a circle, escaping from a pattern of squares, falling and getting stuck in a puzzle, escaping from other eyes, cities, natures and going on.
