DESIGN NAME: Future is Now
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Living Lab
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for Future is Now is the global movement in sustainable development. Taiwan has been reinforcing the recycling system that reaches up to 55 percent in 2016. However, this recycling system creates unutilized resources in the city in Taiwan. By incorporating the idea of the circular economy, those resources could articulate better. Future is Now focuses on the building material, food resources, and manpower to promote circularity in the city.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The goal of the Future is Now event is to provide a group of people who are interested in shifting to a sustainable lifestyle the opportunity to change for the healthier society. Based on the year theme of 2019 SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, the event coordinate sharing talks of the pioneers in the professional field to share knowledge, insights, and also plan for small changes that can be achieved in our daily life at the venue Hua Shan Art Station in Taipei.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To fit the requirements of events during the program, the space planning for Living Lab needs the flexibility to have multi-usage for various activities. The wooden pallets are installed vertically by the windows to create space for indoor plants while the movable modular furniture is made with also wooden pallets for seating. There is a large lighting installation made with recycled film from an LED screen on the ceiling to create the atmosphere and focal point during the program. All of these elements in the space are going to be recycled or reused after the event.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Hua Shan Art Station built in 1937 used as a freight station, and gradually idled around 30 years ago. In 2016 the building was re-planned for cultural and creative related activities. During the Future is Now program, we filed the space with green architecture and circular building design ideas in which utilize passive design strategies, material selections, extending product lifespan, and modular design for transforming the interior of building.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The construction of Living Lab involved not only professional construction workers but also the designers and university students to spread the awareness of circular design. The construction site managed the less-landfill concept for even the packaging material so that the majority of waste sorted in recycle trash. We cleaned and sanded the second-hand wooden pallet for the public safety, and also rolled the recycled film and tied with a recyclable plastic band to create a lighting fixture.
