DESIGN NAME: Cancer Assassin
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Self Promotional
INSPIRATION: The artist is a certified medical illustrator working in the advertising and marketing of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Self promotional work created for clients, and prospective clients, is a chance to promote the artist's creativity, artistry and storytelling skills in visual science.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: People fighting cancer often want to know how to visualize fighting back. This is one visualization capturing the moment of cancer cell death, and the victory of the body's natural immune defenses, Natural Killer T cells. An entire branch of medical research focuses on amplifying and strengthening Natural Killer T cells' effectiveness.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This work depicts a frozen moment in time, memorializing a moment humanity desires.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was in development for two weeks at the artist's studio in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, USA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Created using Cinema 4D, a 3D modeling program, and Photoshop, on a Mac.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The artist researched the morphology of Killer T cells, cancer cells, and Killer T cells and cancer cells in a death struggle, by studying electron micrographs and written research. She then created 3D models of a Killer T cell, cancer cell, fracture explosion, and cell debris using Cinema 4D, on a Mac. The rest of the digital painting was completed by hand work of drawing and painting in Photoshop using a stylus and tablet, on a Mac.
CHALLENGE: The artist sought to create a portrait of the simple but dramatic moment the death grip of the Killer T cell overcomes the cancer cell's defenses.

I am absolutely in awe of this incredible work! The concept of a self-promotional project that showcases the ability to visualize a powerful moment of struggle and victory is simply breathtaking. The research and attention to detail that went into creating 3D models and then painting them by hand is remarkable! This incredible work captures the moment of cancer cell death and the victory of the body's natural immune defenses. The intricate 3D models, hand-drawn and painted elements, and the fracture explosion all come together to create a stunning visual portrait of the death grip of the Killer T cell. I am so inspired by Cynthia Turner's work, "Cancer Assassin". Her attention to detail, scientific accuracy and creativity is truly remarkable. It is amazing how she was able to capture the moment of cancer cell death, and the victory of the body's natural immune defenses, Natural Killer T Cells. I am in awe of how she was able to research the morphology of Killer T Cells, cancer cells, and Killer T Cells and cancer cells in a death struggle, by studying electron micrographs and written research. And to then create 3D models of a Killer T Cell, cancer cell, fracture explosion and cell debris is a testament to her skill. Every stroke of her stylus and tablet was done with such care. She has made a beautiful, powerful work of art that conveys a very important message. I am so proud of her achievements and delighted to celebrate her success in winning the A' Design Award.
