Despite the normal shopping and experience nature of the mall, the introduction of “docks” for instant plug-in of varieties brings in new energy. This “I-dock” at the main atrium is an icon of interest and Instagram, a point of imagination and inspiration, and a place for information and input. This multi-tasking energy node is like a commercial docking component around the atrium orbit, brings in centripetal force to attract people. Another docking component, the “S-dock” in the secondary atrium serves as a stepped-connecting platform of life synergy, social activities, sustainable sharing of sunlight and roof terrace scene. This social-adaptive use of space is the core element of this nomadic culture to orbiting around, yet injects living energy to the mall routines. No matter where they are, people can shift the purpose of shopping, to working or exercising within a mall to fit their personal priorities. This emphasizes a new hybrid between the shopping mall and the co-functioning space.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The mall is a new development at Yuhuatai district, a new “Silicon Valley” of Nanjing. It is surrounded by office towers planned for start-ups and high-profile companies. To serve this dynamic community, the design tries to accommodate the lifestyle of the mainstream of target customers such as creative talents, expatriates, freelancers, IT experts, etc. among the district, who have high working mobility and demands a flexible mode of life and a convenient environment for multiple tasks. The design aims to create an environment which not only serves as a mall of experience but can also adapt to such behavior and respond to their life cycle, like a docking station which fits into their space-time orbit around the mall, recharge and reinforce their social and sensational spirits.
CHALLENGE: The design process has restructured the mall programs that combine working, leisure & retail. A new hybrid of shopping programs that creates challenges on design and pushes forward shopping mall possibility by reorganizing the mixed space. The design result was multipurpose for different programs use, a seamless space for working, leisure & retail. The mall become gradually borderless, coinciding a mix and match of activities and possibilities, and stimulating the co-working and co-living potentials of both tenant shops and common area, with inspirations, interactions and interventions everywhere along the “orbit”.
