INSPIRATION:
There is an emerging trend that more people are using cleaning robots to help with the housework. However, there are still pain points according to user feedback. The air-purification range is limited and is not enough for multi-room houses. Also, for small apartments, there needs to be a balance between functions and space-saving. I was inspired by the image of Emperor Penguin and its baby, and I come up with the idea of combining air-purifier and floor sweeper to tackle the problems.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Duo: is a multifunctional cleaning robot designed for home. It innovatively integrates air-purification and floor-sweeping to meet most of the household cleaning needs. The air purifier can move along with the floor sweeper, which expands the purification range and improves the working efficiency. The compact size of the sweeper robot can make it easily go underneath the furniture i.e. places that are hard to reach. The duo works together to provide an easy and overall cleaning experience.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The interaction between the users and duo is intuitive and easy. Users can press the physical buttons on the top surface to change the setting, and can see the current status of the cleaning robot from the screen.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in May 2017 and finished in June 2017 in Shanghai.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Nowadays, more Chinese customers value higher life quality. This makes the market segment of household cleaning robots gain huge potential and it is still boosting. However, air-purifier and floor-sweeper rose in Western, the usage context and user demands between the West and China are very different. By conducting the market overview and 6 user interviews, several pain points are found. Most air purifiers can only work in a fixed location, which is not flexible, not efficient, and not small-apartment-friendly. For the floor sweeper, the most tricky problem is about the balance of size. There is a contradiction between fitting house environment[small] and mechanical requirements[big].
