DESIGN NAME: New Chinoiserie 3D Jewellery
PRIMARY FUNCTION: 3D Printed Jewellery
INSPIRATION: The look of this collection is inspired by Chinoiserie, prominent Oriental Rococo style in the 18th century. The designer used traditional Oriental elements such as peony, bamboo weaving, Chinese puzzle balls, and jade and reinterpreted with edgy fashionable elements.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The set is made of solid bronze with 18 karat gold plating and was made by direct metal laser 3D printing, without moulding, casting and welding. The set integrates Embedded Gemstones, a signature feature and technique developed by the GemX team, making jewellery with direct metal 3D printing with embedded gemstones without hand weldings. The design and technology is 100 percent developed in-house by GemX, the world's most sustainable jewellery brand, making all its pieces with cutting-edge direct 3D printing technologies and lab-grown gemstones. Founded in 2016, GemX strikes to research, develop and promote sustainable manufacturing methods and aims to reduce jewellery manufacturing pollution by up to 80 percent.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The set can be worn together or separately. Necklace can be worn in two ways: the flowers in the front centre of neck for a classic look, or the flowers on the side of neck for a more fashionable look. Ring set of two shall be worn together, as they are attached with a chain.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: From 2018 Jan to Sept 2019. Shenzhen, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The set was first created with hand sketch, then CAD files were made before being imported into data preparation softwares for metal 3D printing. It is a metal powder based printer with high power fiber laser head and high speed scanning system, with mechanic designs optimized for intricate jewellery or other small and complex geometric pieces.
The materials used in this set is solid bronze, alloy of 90 percent Copper and 10 percent Tin. The pieces were electroplated with 18 karate yellow gold.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Jewellery set of earring, necklace and ring. Dimensions: earring 4x6x2cm, necklace 33x2x12cm, ring 13x3x3cm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Jewelry and accessories manufacturing heavily uses moulding and casting as manufacture method, by printing or jetting 3D resin or wax moulds, and use the lost wax method to remove the resin or wax to receive the metal parts. The lost wax method is the most commonly and widely used method to make metal jewelry and artworks. It has major limitations, such as high energy consumption and high pollution.
By introducing cutting edge technologies into jewelry making, we eliminate the moulding and casting process, and transform jewelry making into a clean and effective process.
CHALLENGE: Advanced direct metal laser printing is currently used mostly in aerospace, national defence, automotive, and biochemistry. It is a new technology for making jewellery. There were a few challenges, such as software compatibility and printer optimisation. The company solved some of the problems above and successfully designed a metal laser printer suitable for jewellery printing.
