RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The goal of this design research is relatively simple and straight-forward: With all the functional requirements, how to make it work in such a limited space? An in-depth qualitative research was established across work backgrounds, living styles, habits, and future plans of the family, so that expectations could be defined and segmented. With the help of the bubble diagram, segments were then restructured and developed into customized plans viable to the project site.
CHALLENGE: Functionality is paramount in this project, and the space limitation makes it the biggest challenge to overcome. For instance, the original main bedroom was split into half horizontally just to accommodate the demanded dressing room. With precise calculation and execution, both activity areas of the upper and lower level are with sufficient height to stand up fully with no constraint.
The other main challenge is the diversity of space, in particular, of the multifunctional room. Through design, the light box can be part of the public area with all the slides removed, and it can be a complete private guest room whenever needed. It is solely defined by the usage of the room at the very moment, which makes it extraordinary flexible to respond to the need.
