PRIMARY FUNCTION: Private Residence
INSPIRATION: Trained as an architect, the homeowner who is currently studying architecture prefers something unusual. Rather than a typical open plan layout, the young lady ideal is to bringing in the architectural sense into the interiors of her new home.
What is more, is that the client wish to employ an out of ordinary design, to put creativity as the top priority, despite how challenging it could be.
Aside from that, functional pieces such as a practical working desk, large bookshelf, as well as adequate storage solutions are major requirements raised by our client.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Utilizing the abode soaring ceiling, a custom built cylindrical stacked volume is created in order to bring the homeowner vision into reality. For instance, unusual curvy stacked volume consists of five layers. Such as living area on the floor level, sleeping quarter on above, a bookshelf, a dining table and the custom built stairs. From the inner to the outer, the smallest to the largest. As such, five overlapping circles have been created to fulfill different functions, at the same time sharing the same central point to become a 360 degree living circle concept in these 400 square feet flat.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: For the abode open plan living area, apart from the custom built cylindrical stacked volume that created two storeys, a luxurious walk in closet has been thoughtfully curated next to the entrance foyer, the original location of the open kitchen. In addition, a sleek and fully equipped L shaped open kitchen is reconstructed near the window to fulfill the cooking enthusiast. As for the bathroom, the position has remained the same.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2017 and finished in September 2018 in the mid-levels, Hong Kong

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For the abode open plan living area, kitchen, study and sleeping quarter, one highlight would be the custom built cylindrical fixture that separates the living area and the sleeping quarter. The colour palette remains soft and concise so as to complement the grey tone cylindrical stacked volume highlighted by metallic accents. Designed with femininity and elegance in mind, a neutral colour palette made up of subtle grey and pale white helps to add a calming atmosphere throughout the interiors.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The designer was tasked with re-structuring a 400 square feet open plan residential apartment located at Mid-Levels in Hong Kong. Inspired by micro living concepts and client desire for an out of ordinary interior, the layout was tailored to achieve a 360 degree living circle. One highlight would be the custom built cylindrical fixture that separates the living area and the sleeping quarter.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The price of the Hong Kong property keep rising, far exceeding the affordability of the public. The developers therefore reduce the area of the apartment.
Before drafting ideas into the design, site measurement and interviews on personal preferences, living habits and life style of the property owner were necessary for the design of the floor plan and 3D renderings. Hong Kong small flat were the sources to create a key elements of this living circle. After that, with the help of different suppliers, piles of materials from different origins were gathered for comparison.
CHALLENGE: The walk in closet is designed for the entrance, it reflected by the full length mirror. The entire visual picture is widened. It is convenient to dress up and take off the shoes. The full-height bookcase is highlighted with metal lines, from the ground to the ceiling, and the ceiling seems to be pulled up. The location of the re-planned open kitchen is now near the balcony. The two layer structure design plays an important role in separating different zones. The upper sleeping area design with the soft and thick bed panel, wooden bedside tables, and built in TV appliances.
