DESIGN NAME: Zhuhai Shizimen
PRIMARY FUNCTION: CBD Phase 1
INSPIRATION: The design concept for the development was inspired by the moniker of the city – city of romance, and the connection of the site to the water. As such the convention center building had been designed as a sensuous ribbon that wraps around both open and enclosed space along the water’s edge, including the key elements of the development such as meeting areas and landscape features.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The development complex is comprised of an office-hotel tower, a serviced apartment tower, a hotel tower and an exhibition and convention center and a theater and opera house.
The 330m tower Zhuhai Center is currently the tallest building in Zhuhai. The high zone is the first international five-star hotel in Zhuhai, the St. Regis Hotel. It offers 250 rooms with unblocked sea view. The middle and low zone is an international standard Grade A office building.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The main theme of the phase 1 of Shizimen Central Business District for Convention and Exhibition
Business Development, was human-oriented by creating a romantic, comfortable and relaxing environment. The landscape and the urban elements were closely integrated. The courtyard space of each function was linked and extended to the coastal landscape avenue. With the well-planned circulation of pedestrian and traffic flow, pedestrian was connected to the main entrance of each individual business component forming a multi-channel public activity system. Business travelers can be connected seamlessly and conveniently from Convention center to the office tower or hotel rooms on top.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project design started in 2011 and the Phase 1 construction is completed in 2018. The project is located in the Shizimen District, Zhuhai, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Zhuhai Center: The elegant and luxurious decoration of first floor lobby created a first-class artistic
space and a comfortable working place targeted for high-end international corporate companies.
The St. Regis Hotel: The hotel's overall decoration was based on subtle luxury style while emphasizing privacy for business travelers. The design style of European and Oriental classics inherits the luxury and nobleness of St. Regis hotel brand.
Huafa Place: With a simple and modern style as the main theme, it created an elegant and relax living atmosphere.
Huafa Sheraton Hotel: The hotel lobby was subtly blended with modern elements with Chinese accent and garden elements to create a distinguished atmosphere.
International Exhibition Center: This part is a banquet hall with a square-shaped grid design. It was divided nine spaces in the form of moving partitions. It can be flexibly changed according to the requirements of functional use.
The International Conference Center (including Huafa CPAA Grand Theatre): The interior design style of the theater was contemporary classical design. The musical hall in European classical design. It is the first comprehensive stage for art performance venue built in Zhuhai according to international standards. The overall appearance is luxurious atmosphere, and strong cultural atmosphere.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project sits in a site with area 203,000 sq.m. and floor area of 340,000 sq.m.
Zhuhai Center (including the St. Regis Hotel ): The middle and low zone of the building is an international standard Grade A office building, which is the highest grade and most comprehensive office building in Zhuhai. The high zone of the building is the St. Regis Hotel consisting of 250 rooms, 3 specialty restaurants, St. Regis Lounge, Air 71 Bar, Murray Spa, indoor thermostatic pool, sky pool and fitness room.
Huafa Place: A serviced apartment consisted of 454 rooms and a restaurant with indoor and outdoor area serving for 150 persons and 80 persons respectively and a cafe serving for 80 persons. There are also facilities for 15-20 persons with high-end multimedia projectors in meeting rooms and business center, fitness room, ATM machine and large underground parking lot.
Huafa Sheraton Hotel: Including 548 rooms, 4 restaurants and bars, 2000 sqm of banquet meeting area and indoor and outdoor pool, fitness center, tennis court.
International Exhibition Center: The total construction area is 291,000 sqm, including 201,000 sqm
exhibition center and 90,000 sqm conference center.
The International Conference Center (including Huafa CPAA Grand Theater): With a total construction area of 33,000 sqm, the hall offers 1200 seats and the classical-style concert hall offers 800 seats.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Sustainability and cost control are the key concerned parts throughout the design process. Local and overseas experts were invited to provide research and work together to enlist green solutions for the development, from energy efficiency measures, grey water recycling systems, heat reduction curtain wall, smart systems to reduce both energy use and manpower are eventually adopted as active measures throughout the development.
CHALLENGE: The balance of sustainability and initial cost input is one of the challenging parts throughout the design process. Apart from the active measures mentioned above, passive measures such as orientation and shading offers lower cost and better benefits. Also, all functional spaces including the car parking spaces are designed to maximize natural ventilation and natural daylight. For the office space within the ribbon, it is limited to 18-22 m wide to ensure natural ventilation.
