| DESIGN NAME: Theunique PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smart Aroma Diffusor INSPIRATION: Agarwood has significant meaning in culture, arts, literature and religious ceremony in China. Its aroma is rare and expensive, which can be obtained merely from burning or extraction and afforded by few users. Its usage is strictly limited by time and space. To explore its modern using context and new market possibilities, a project was launched to study agarwood with modern Bio-Technology and a product set was developed based on it. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The product set consists of a smart aroma diffuser and several natural and hand-made agarwood tablets, which can be used inside of a vehicle. When turning on the diffusor, the tablet inside can be heated multi-dimensionally, creating an immersive aroma environment, wherever and whenever a user drives. Agarwood tablet created and heated this way can volatilise stably with longer time and higher efficiency, compared with the traditional way of burning. It revolutionises agarwood industry with an easy to use, customised, affordable and sustainable solution. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: First, put an agarwood tablet inside of a smart aroma diffuser. Then, insert the diffuser into the cigarette lighter inside of a vehicle. After turning on the diffusor, the tablet inside can be heated multi-dimensionally, creating an immersive aroma environment. Users can customised time, density and variety of aroma volatilisation with ease. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The research of this project began in 2014. The product set was launched in the market in 2017. The project achieves great success in the design industry and in the market. Its series of products have won international awards like IF and Red Dot. Partners and clients include Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Accor Hotels, InterContinental Hotels, Bank of China, etc. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product set is granted with design and technology patents and qualified with international safety standards of SGS and ROHS. The making of portable natural agarwood tablet takes 6 months of perfection using biotechnology, physical thermostat control, fine grinding and carefully multi-dimensional moulding by hand. The tablet maintains its precious and unique ingredients, like spirulin, furan, white wood sulphuric acid and so on. The diffusor is consisted of magnetic heat-absorbed insulation cover, polymer insulation product body and anodised aluminium casing to improve the time, efficiency, and effectiveness of volatilisation. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 32mm x 100mm TAGS: Smart Aroma Diffusor, Natural Arwarwood Product, Vehicle-mounted, Immersive Experience, New Using Context RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To modernise the traditional agarwood industry and let more people afford and enjoy it, the first industry-university collaborated agarwood Bio-Technology Lab is set up in China to study its new integration, using scenario and context. The R&D process takes 3 years, with 60 designs and 10 prototypes created, and over 200 experiments conducted to ensure the performance, efficiency and experience of the product. CHALLENGE: One challenge of the project is to maximise the efficiency of aroma volatilisation. The space inside of a vehicle, duration and speed of volatilisation, density of aroma, and temperature of heating is calculated and tested carefully. Besides, as the diffusor is inserted inside of the cigarette lighter, different vehicles have different standards, it is quite hard to adjust to them.
