DESIGN NAME: Modern Odyssey
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Installation Spaces
INSPIRATION: Inspiration for the concept of Modern Odyssey derived from studying various affluent cultural beliefs that had influenced past jewellery design. From this, ancient Greek mythology was most apt due to its array of complex characters and symbolisms. It provided plenty of scopes to curate the physical spaces using allegories as clues rather than show the referred Greek deity. As such, each installation was unique to its central character such as Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Apollo, Artemis to Athena etc.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The event organiser for the 2019 Hong Kong International Jewellery Show required an overall image uplift to envelop the various allocated spaces. Areas such as the main foyer and various entrances into the specialised jewellery halls were offered to a new design. A concept called Modern Odyssey was developed using allegories from ancient Greek mythology was developed to decorate these areas. Besides this, only 3 days were permitted for the onsite setup.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The flow was designed in chronological order related to the theme Modern Odyssey. Various allegorical installations were created in reference to the Greek deities. Starting with the translation of Zeus at the main foyer as a welcome installation. Then moving to Poseidon, Hera, Apollo, Artemis and Athena being represented at the other entrance areas within the venue.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project duration was 3 months from the initial briefing to onsite completion. It was located at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, Hong Kong and the event ran for 5 days starting from the 28th of February to the 4th of March 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: All the walls and columns were built using a lightweight metallic framed structure, cladded with translucent graphic mesh and backlit. Bespoke props, lighting, LED and in some areas ambient soundtrack was used to produce the various allegorical installations in the spaces. All the production had to be tested offsite before the final onsite construction. This was due to the very tight 3 days allowance for the onsite installation.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The venue’s main entrance mesh arch was 17m wide x 5m high, inside the Zeus shrine installation with LED waterfall at the foyer sat 50m2 x 4.5m high. The following entrance treatment designs inside the venue were constructed with similar specification. All walls and columns were built using a lightweight metal framed structure, cladded with translucent graphic mesh and backlit. Bespoke props, lighting, LED were used to produce various ambient allegoric installations.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research for the Modern Odyssey concept started as a study on various civilization, folklores and cultural beliefs that were influential to past jewellery design. From this research, ancient Greek mythology was chosen due to its array of multifaceted characters and symbolisms. It provided plenty of material to curate a journey at the venue as an overarching theme. This led to the idea of allegorical installations to developed the space instead of showing the actual Greek god.
CHALLENGE: Once the concept direction was set, the challenge was to research the fascinating stories from ancient Greek mythology. It was then that a hierarchal approach was used to build the visitors journey throughout the whole exhibition. Firstly, with Zeus at the foyer then followed by the entrance treatments into the specialised halls using the other deities and so forth. Another challenge was the short move in time, therefore all the material specification had to be lightweight and easily assembled.
