DESIGN NAME: Butterfly
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hanger
INSPIRATION: The butterfly hanger got its name for its resemblance to the shape of a flying butterfly. It is minimalistic furniture that can be assembled in a convenient way due to the design of the separated components.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Most of the assembled furniture in the Chinese market are constructed by metal joints. However, these metal joints are not ideal for long-term use, because metal and wood are different in material properties that make the joint becomes loose after repeated assemble and disassemble. Butterfly hanger is a kind of furniture benefitted from its material property. Metal and wood are connected through a designed structure, which will not cause internal loss and suitable for repeated disassembly and assembly.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Users can quickly assemble the hanger by bare hands. When it is necessary to move, it is convenient to transport after disassemble.
Installation only takes two steps: 1.stack both frames together to form an 'X' and make the diamond-shaped frames on each side overlapped. 2. slide the wooden piece through the overlapped diamond-shaped frames on both sides to hold the frames together.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2018 at Kyushu University in Japan and finished in July 2018 at Kyushu University in Japan.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: With the fast-paced urbanization and rapid development of the logistics industry in China, a large number of assembled furniture appeared in the market. However, they are often of poor quality, and the metal joints make it hard to assemble and disassemble the furniture repeatedly because they will not fit into the drill holes and remain tight over the course of the product’s lifecycle. When the customer moves to a new place for a job change or other reasons, it inevitably produces a large number of 'furniture garbage', resulting in environmental pollution and waste of resources.
I have been studying this problem and have long been engaged in the research of the new Ready-to-assemble furniture (RTA). Prioritizing the functionality, I managed to create a perfect RTA that is elegant, durable, and perfectly structured, while making the best out of the features of the material.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge is to explore this structure and its application in furniture. Its structure needs to include the following features:1. no need for joints and assembly tools; 2. simple installation steps; 3. assembled and disassembled repeatedly; 4. components can be replaced separately if needed. The furniture needs to include the following features:practical, suitable for industrial production, sustainable, environment- friendly.
