DESIGN NAME: Jiayuan Oriental Courtyard
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Villa
INSPIRATION: The design is inspired by the traditional Chinese landscaoe paintings. The oriental cultural elements are through the whole space, as well the sunk courtyard.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In this space design, traditional Chinese culture elements are tactfully combined with modern materials, wise application of colors and decoration on details, creating a balanced and elegant modern oriental living space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Up to the third floor, the design emphasizes the match between modern materials and traditional elements. There once were two terraces, in which one is kept and another is changed into a semi-open study room. A new oriental space is thus built by the decoration of furniture of Ming and Qing style, including hanging screen, calligraphy and paintings, antique and bonsai.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is completed in October 2018, in Jiaxing, Zhejiang, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The villa features an open spacing, a large depth and large ceiling heights. After in-depth analysis on the building structure, the design methods take full advantage of the unique spacing scale and heights between floors of the villa. So, the design pointcut is to restore the original beauty of architecture and to keep the existing ceiling height.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The villa covers 1000 square meters with large ceiling heights. The open kitchen shares the same landscape with the living room and outdoor courtyard. In this way, the family interaction becomes closer and more effective. In the second floor, the combination of natural texture and simple colors in design reflects the longing for nature.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: While down to the basement, it is a quite different space experience. Line is highlighted by the materials like wood, metal, leather and marble, enlarging the scale vertically and horizontally. The massive use of wood presents the Chinese antique aesthetics.
CHALLENGE: One of the design challenges is how to integrate the outdoor terraces, balcony and sunk courtyard with the interior function layout to create a new life style of courtyard. In the first floor, the dining room is exchanged with the guestroom area, in order to build a quiet sleeping environment.
