DESIGN NAME: Vaan R4
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sustainable Sailing Yacht
INSPIRATION: Every year 80,000 boats reach end-of-life, in Europe alone. Of those 80,000, only 2,000 are properly dismantled. The remaining 78,000 are burned in incinerators, causing massive CO2 emissions. The Vaan R4 shows this can be changed for the better.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Vaan R4 is a luxury sailing yacht made of recycled aluminium window frames, traffic signs and licence plates. It is a truly sustainable yacht that is about 100% recyclable at 'end-of'life. Besides recycled aluminium we also use other sustainable materials such as cork decking, leather alternatives from pineapple leaves and upholstery from recycled cotton.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This cat is sailed like a monohull, from the helm positions at the back (as opposed to most other cats). It also has an open transom which increases contact with the water. It leads to more sailing excitement and better performance.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2017 with first designs. August 2019 the production will start. Early 2020 the first Vaan R4 will be in the water for customers.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design of the Vaan R4 aims to bring together 3 key properties: 1. exciting sailing experience, 2. luxury comfort and space, 3. Sustainability. This led to a monohull like styling, in a catamaran form factor, made of circular materials.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Length: 1280 cm
Width 706 cm
Height 1950cm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: With the Vaan R4 we are trying to prove that building a luxury yacht from recycled materials is indeed feasible an that the performance of the product is equal to or better than comparable products. We are constantly researching materials for their recyclability as well as their performance on their main functions and specifications. We are working with several suppliers to help us select and then test each product.
CHALLENGE: There are a lot of unspoken rules when it comes to yacht design. Both in lay-out as in material use and look. Limiting ourselves to sustainable products of course means that we sometimes cannot adhere to those unspoken rules and expectations. However, we see this as an advantage; limitations fuel creativity and steer us into unique solutions and designs.
