DESIGN NAME: Aktas
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lamp
INSPIRATION: This product was designed to be used in commercial spaces. It was meant to look as modern and simple as possible. Hanging detail and all cabling have been concealed to minimize visual clutter. It is a simple but elegant product. It stands out in the space with its simple design and shiny finish. The use of the Edison bulb was meant to add a sensible and nostalgic touch to the otherwise modern product.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a unique and versatile product. This product is designed to be used in commercial spaces. The most unique aspect is found in the lightness of its frame. The single-piece frame is produced from bending 20 x 20 x 1,5mm square metal profile. The light frame supports a relatively solid and transparent glass cylinder encasing the light bulb. One 40W E27 long and slim incandescent Edison light bulb is to be used in the product. The metal pieces are painted a bright bronze color.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The cabling of the light fixture is attached to 220V. main electric system and an fuse is assigned to control all light fixtures in a zone. No other intervention is needed for operation. The light fixture is mounted on walls adjacent to dining tables in the main hall. The fixture provides light to both the tables placed just underneath and also to the general space.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The whole project included the design of approximately 2,000 m2 of space to serve as a patisserie and supporting production areas. The design scope contained various scaled design activities. Scale of design varying from the design of the outer façade of the building, then the creation of floor layout plans and decoration concept studies in interior arcitectural design scale; and finally to the design of furniture, separators and various lighting fixtures on the product design scale. The project started March 2017 and finished in December 2017 in Ankara, Turkey.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product was designed with the aim of creating a simple but elegant lighting apparatus. The single piece metal profile was bent in order to shift the source of illumination approximately 50cm. apart from the wall. As this lighting fixture was designed for use in commercial cafe's & restaurants; the shifting of the light source would mean a more homogeneous level of illumination on the table surfaces just below. A transparent cylindrical formed glass encasing is used to encircle the visibility of the Edison bulb used in the lamp.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A qualitative type of research benefiting mostly from the observation of social areas of interest has been conducted. The Research Objectives have been to concentrate on aspects such as lighting design, material selection and interior ambiance formation. So what has been designed as a result of this process has not merely been a lighting fixture; but a lighting fixture supporting the design language, interior atmosphere and design concept in a wholesome attitude.
CHALLENGE: The biggest problem to deal with generally in design projects generally is the difficulty in persuading clients to give permission to and manufactury approval of newly designed items. The difficulty arises from the fact that uniquely designed items always carry the risk of being over-priced and the quality of manufacture is not always determinable. However in this project, I would sincerely like to thank the owner of several Liva Patisserie branches, Mr. Reyhan Haciosmanoglu for his belief and trust placed in myself and my design capabilities.
