DESIGN NAME: Portapass
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Travelling Wallet
INSPIRATION: The designs of travel documents holders are mainly focusing on light weight, waterproof, or the arrangement of the slots...etc. But due to the restricted dimension of boarding passes, it has to be longer than the size of passport. Mostly they can not fit in our pockets. Therefore it becomes as an extra carrying while travelling. Looking at our wallets, the opening and closing is on X axis, then why not fold it on another direction? Thus we came up with a design on both X and Y axis movement.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Portapass is a leather craft designed for frequent traveler. The iconic two-directional closure with brass buttons, giving you a double reliefs for secure valued belongings. Based on the standard measurement of a passport, the idea is to extend the possibilities for its maximum storage. Thanks to the flexible characteristic of the vegetable-tanned leather, users can now place these rectangular tickets in it without creasing them yet in a compact method.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: For the user who first explores our design, pay attention to the position of the press buttons. Open the vertical direction first followed by the parallel direction. The two buttons have been well settled for both right-handed and left-handed. Referring to the slot designed for boarding pass, it can tolerate up to 215mm, so the folded A4 (printed) tickets are also acceptable.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2018 in Firenze and finished in March 2019 in Firenze.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Portapass is created by vegetable-tanned leather. Unlike the artificial leather, it can be bend or fold in a natural way. The each parts are joint with Serafil nylon thread, we believe the simplest combination of the two classic materials will establish sustainability and high tolerance for an intensive long-term usage.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The closed dimension is Width 100mm x Depth 150mm x Height 12mm
While opened, is Width mm 205 mm x Depth 225mm x Height 5mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I myself used to attach the boarding pass in my passport without any holder. But once a unforgettable tragedy occured that I cannot find it right in front of the boarding gate! After this incident, I started researching for an optimal product to redress this. Mostly it turns up simply as a passport cover with less function. On the other hand, if it is a travel wallet, it might be way too large as a bag. For us, the size does matters (for carrying). These tickets usually printed with a perforated line, it might be creased or separated apart easily. In order to address these problems concisely and efficiently, we began the Portapass project.
CHALLENGE: To achieve the two directional operating idea, first we have to overcome the cracking on the edge coating, resulting from long-term testing. Finally, we came up with a solution by an unique technique called rimboccare. It represented the means that tucking in the edge in the reverse way along with controlling the thickness of the leather parts in order to maintain the comprehensiveness and quality.
