| DESIGN NAME: Commemoration Book PRIMARY FUNCTION: Commemoration Book INSPIRATION: To achieve a high level, very clean and sophisticated publication to commemorate the 10 years of the Azrieli Fellows Program, I wanted the overall look of the book to be enhance with a slipcase. Slipcases are part of what makes a anniversary book special and at the same time it could add an extra protection to the finished product, however I didn’t want the user to handle that extra piece when manipulating the book, sliding the books out of the cases can’t be good for them. Having a casebound with a three-panel cover that has two opposite sides folded to meet at the center was a unique way to present the book. A thin magnet was also inserted and hidden in the binder’s board to keep everything nicely close and it conceals the beauty of the book when you pick it up. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To celebrate their 10th anniversary the Azrieli Fellows Program had a special evening Gala devoted to celebrating the Fellows that have been part of the program for the past ten years. For that occasion the Azrieli Fellows Program released a special edition book that focus on some of those remarkable Fellows. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Designing the casebound book with a three-panel cover gate fold work just great to replace a slipcase. This way the user doesn’t have to handle that extra piece when manipulating the book, and a slipcase, actually increase the chance of damage to the book when trying to extract from, or return to. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2017 in Ottawa, Canada and finished in November 2017 in Toronto, Canada. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 128 pages, casebound with a 2 flaps gate fold cover (sewn into book blocks, trimmed to size, spine is glued, and hardcover bound to .098" thick binder's board) book. Printed 4 colors process on McCoy Matte 100lb. Cover with black foil over Neenah Touché® papers black soft touch. The book opens very wide with the gate fold cover being used as a box for the book. Printed by Flash Reproduction. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: book sizes: 19.8 x 26.7 x 1.9 cm; open sizes with the gate fold 62.3 x 60 cm TAGS: Book, Editorial, Print Design, Catalogue, Graphic Design, Commemoration Book, Publishing, Binding, Cover, Typeset RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The goal was to design a very clean and sophisticated book to commemorate the 10 years of the Azrieli Fellows Program. I’ve look at several book options and all the interesting book had a book sleeve. I liked the idea but I wanted to push it to the next level by using the cover to replace the book sleeve. Being able to communicate that idea to the printer and binder was critical, so it could happen and that the production cost was respected. CHALLENGE: This project was design and printed in record time. The book was written, designed and printed in less then 90 days. Within the next three years, the Azrieli Fellows Program will support a steady state of approximately 90 Fellows per year, including graduate students from Israel, postdoctoral researchers from abroad, and young faculty. |
