DESIGN NAME: Modular Ring Series
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Rings
INSPIRATION: The most complex ring in the collection was the first ring one in this series. The idea of the ring came to Valerie Chaika from the reflection of possible ways of putting a sphere on the finger in the less conventional way. After the first ring, the designer decided to create a whole series of rings with the process of deconstruction from the complex to the simple one using only geometric forms.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: These designs begin with blocks and grids, and from there explore the possibility of play through asymmetry, repetition, and moments where elements of a piece interact through movement, weight, or points of contact. RIIA pieces engage a meditation on form, the simplicity of the shapes and materials emphasized by careful artisanal construction.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In a true neo-minimalist fashion, the designs radically eschew the overly decorative, ornamental aesthetics of conventional jewelry with flashy stone centerpieces. Instead, RIIA calls attention to the materiality of the object.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For Sterling Silver Modular Rings, the artisan first creates the silver sheet, then cut it in ring's size band. Then in a process of banding, the artisan creates the final ring, adding a sphere, if necessary for the design. There are two ways of jewelry production, such as casting and artisanal method. Even though casting is the more under-control way of making jewelry, RIIA uses artisanal methods to preserve an ancient craft.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The designer brainstormed numerous ideas. She was looking for interaction with the viewer. One way to achieve this was to create the object, that has an ability to interact. And jewelry craft was the perfect medium, that combines artistic expression and the functional quality, that can serve as a point of contact.
CHALLENGE: The hardest task of the design is to change human habits by introducing new and innovating solutions using the language of conventional design. This challenge is always in the designer's head creating new pieces.
