DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: Chiglia
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table
INSPIRATION: The inspiration of the project comes from the skeleton of boats, the keel, from which the name. The result is a tribute to the traditional activities neglected in the past for an industrial reality forced by the italian national economy.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Chiglia is a tribute to the marine activity of Taranto, the town in which Giuliano Ricciardi was born and lives. 9 vertebrae sustain the glass top and join the central beam through a swallow tailed structure. The central beam is set upon stands that recall those used to restore boats in the shipyards. This solution allows to customize the table by changing the length of the beam and the number of vertebrae. The project is based on the use of appropriate embeddings without the use of metal pins.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Simple, linear, light but at the same time solid; Keel isn't just a table, but a memory, a wreck under the surface of the water, an emotional sculpture.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2012 in Taranto, Italy. The fullscale prototype was made in Taranto and completed in June 2012
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design
|
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The table is made of solid oak using common woodworking machines. The table top is in tempered glass
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: size: 2250 x 1000 x 740
TAGS: table, keel, interiordesign, vertebrae, bone, boat, sea, wood, furniture, home
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research is based on the rediscovery of traditional crafts, such as the shipwright or the sailor, and on the impact that the industry has had on my native land.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to find useful forms to be able to adapt the length of the table by simply replacing the central element, increasing the number of vertebrae.

I am in awe of Chiglia, the award-winning table by Giuliano Ricciardi. This magnificent design is a tribute to the marine activities of Taranto, and its unique solution of 9 vertebrae supporting the glass top and joining the central beam through a swallow tailed structure is an incredible combination of craftsmanship and modern industrialism. The research behind this work is evident in the rediscovery of traditional crafts and its impact on the designer's hometown. Giuliano Ricciardi has also done an amazing job in overcoming the challenge of finding a useful form that allows for the length of the table to be adjusted simply by replacing the central element and increasing the number of vertebrae. The production of this table is also noteworthy as it is made from solid oak and tempered glass, and is crafted with common woodworking machines. Chiglia is a true testament to the power of good design, and is a deserving winner of the A' Furniture Design Award.

It is truly amazing to witness the ingenuity of a design that pays homage to the history of its birthplace. The Chiglia Table is a stunning example of a functional piece of furniture that is a perfect blend of form and function. Its unique design elements, such as the 9 vertebrae supporting the glass top and the central beam set on boat-like stands, truly make it stand out from the rest. Moreover, the use of appropriate embeddings without the need for any metal pins further highlights the designer's remarkable skill and attention to detail. This is truly a work of art that deserves recognition and I am so glad it has been awarded the A' Design Award!
