DESIGN NAME: Nightshift Shanghai
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Reportage Art
INSPIRATION: NIGHTSHIFT SHANGHAI reflects the quiet but genuine face of a city that, like hardly any other city, is constantly changing in order to get even more out of it, but beyond that likes to hide its less striking side. But I find this site especially beautiful because it is authentic.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: While during the day we scouted and photographed with a small team across the city to the location, in the late evening and at night I was on the road with my assistant in the alleys, which are far away from the glamorous shopping malls and flagship stores of the luxury brands. Often just a block away, the shop owners sell everything you need for your daily life, from groceries, paints and flowers to cigarettes and shoes.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: While during the day I shot pictures with my client Porsche, in the late evening and at night I was on the road with my assistant in the alleys, which are far away from the glamorous shopping malls and flagship stores of the luxury brands. Fascinated by the partly garish colours and the chaotic interior and offer, I got to know satisfied people, who often sit in front of your shops, because there is no more space inside. And life plays on the sidewalk. People talk, play, dance and sleep.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 7 Days in August in Shanghai and 4 days in September in Shanghai for taking the pictures, 10 days post production.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Often just a block away from the luxury flagship stores, these shop owners sell everything you need for your daily life, from groceries, paints and flowers to cigarettes and shoes.
And all this on very few square meters, space is expensive in Shanghai. And life plays on the sidewalk. People talk, play, dance and sleep.
It is fascinating how the different light colors work togther.
CHALLENGE: It was a challenge to take the pictures without being noticed. Not because of taking the pictures secretly but not to force the people wave and smile. I wanted to create lively and authentic pictures. After I did so, I usually said hello and described what I was doing. Sometimes the invited me for a tea or a beer.
