INSPIRATION: It resembles beautiful curves of the natural objects. Overall shape comes from horn which is widely known as object with mystery and adventurous spirit. This curved device is surrounded with hand strap, and each colour theme was inspired by the Carribean Sea - deep sea, beach sand and tropical toucan bird. Odyssey has two ways of interacting with users - ‘see through’, and ‘listen to’. We used seashell and telescope as our source of inspiration in designing interactions.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Odyssey is an augmented reality activity product and platform designed for kids. Kids can follow interesting storyline by listening to the product. They can explore outer world by finding hidden objects with AR display. Odyssey enable kids to play outside with their friends or family members with exciting stories which will replace static indoor contents like Youtube. Odyssey can create exciting and trustful outdoor activity contents for both children and parents, letting them to be a real hero.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Kids can find hidden objects by listening to sound from Odyssey, and interact with objects when they finally reach its location. This gives them adventurous and mysterious experience, and will stir their imagination. Kids are only going to see the AR display when they reach hidden objects, and they mainly listen to the sound for the rest of play. It prevents accidents caused by walking while they are obsessed with digital screen. According to the research and interviews, guardians like parents care about safety for kids and they want to take part in their play with direct restriction. When guardians set up the game, Odyssey suggests proper play time for the game theme and excludes unsafe roads from the play zone automatically. Also, guardians can limit the play zone directly and place the virtual game items on the map with their device. During the activity, Odyssey device notifies the real-time location of children with GPS signal and alerts when children step outside of the designated play zone. This experience makes guardians to take part in the game of their kids and play together with them.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Physical activity is very important for children’s balanced mental and physical growth. We wish to bring children outside of their home by creating a nurturing and trustful environment. So that they are able to interact with people and nature directly, and will be able to build healthy relationship with people and the world. We hope to achieve the goal of increasing children’s outdoor activity time by taking the technology outside. As a result, Odyssey can help build kids’ culture in a better way for society, as they are going to be future generation leading our society.
CHALLENGE: We have noticed that existing products for kids’ play are mainly designed towards indoor activity. Guardians consider their children's safety as top priority. They want to control over kids' play to make sure they are safe. So they prefer indoor activity because of safety issue and their business. Furthermore, other things have to be considered when parents decide to go out, like where to go for a play and what kind of activities they are going to do. While online contents have various motivation for play like quest, level-up moment that keep them play again and again. So we decided to create exciting outdoor activity contents which will benefit kids and guardians at the same time. That’s where we faced challenge because we tried to make this activity exciting enough for kids’ perspective, and at the same time it has to reassure safety for guardians’ perspective.
