| DESIGN NAME: Eco PRIMARY FUNCTION: Freshness Tag INSPIRATION: Inspired by chemical indicator, the pH of solutions can be expressed in different colour scale, what if the freshness of the egg can be expressed in different colours as well to help consumers indentify the egg quality. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Egg tag is an intuitive solution for consumers to know the freshness and quality of egg. There are no simple and effective solutions to check the quality of egg, we often store eggs for a long time until we open it... By the help of egg tag, consumers can simply refer to the colors on the label to check whether the egg is broken or not. Green means fresh, yellow represents stale and red means bad. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Egg tag is labeled on each egg before they are shipped to the customers. Users can eat egg with the certain colored order, they may pick up and eat the less fresh egg first. When eggs are stored for a long time, customers can distinguish the broken eggs by the colored labels. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Egg freshness tag is a one-direction carbon dioxide chemical indicator which changes its color according to the amount of carbon dioxide emits from the egg. It is a one-way filter which means the carbon dioxide from the environment will not have an impact on the change of color. During the research and testing stages, I found the mixture of carbon dioxide sensitive indicator with stabilizer can achieve the color changing function. It has been proved this material is health free to human and it would not contaminate the egg. This material is then deposited by printer on the paper-based tag, and stamped on the surface of egg act as a freshness tag. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 9mm x Depth 1mm x Height 18mm for indicator labels; Width 280mm x Depth 120mm x Height 70mm for package box. TAGS: Freshness indicator, Package design, Material design, Egg label, concept design，idea design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: According to the literature research, there are great number of foods, approximately 34%, are wasted daily because of over storage issue. One of the significant reasons is that consumers cannot tell the freshness from the appearance from the food, for example egg. Over 58% of the interviewees report their concern over the quality of egg especially after storing them over one month. It enlightens the potential market of egg freshness tag. During the realization stages, I have tested different types of chemical indicator which reacts with carbon dioxide as well as other gas released during the oxidation and corruption process of egg in order to find the most suitable material. The test results proof the function and stability of egg tag concept. CHALLENGE: The key challenge is to determine the type of chemical indicator to express the freshness into different color scale. Aside from that, it requires special printer to deposit the indicator material on the paper-based label. Overall, the cost is controlled in an appropriate and affordable scale to make it suitable for mass production.
