DESIGN NAME: The Puzzle Cube
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential
INSPIRATION: The main concept is to increase functions and activities at the threshold between indoor and outdoor areas. This idea of inhabiting in between space was inspired by a house of an old couple designed in historical Chinese bungalow in few decades.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is an unique property for a frequent travel couple. They would have the design with warm and cosy home feel. Although the area wasn't allow client to put all elements there, but the design team tried to create an open space for kitchen and unbound space from entrance down to garden and living area. By knocking down the walls to two bedrooms and bathroom, the design team created a British style open kitchen with side table connecting to living and dining areas. This was perfect to talk to each other or friends gathering.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The areas in this house is conceptualised clearly their functions such as inside and outside. The outside area was split into two areas (indoor and outdoor part). Dining area was in indoor part and garden was in outdoor part. Sunrise direction is from the dining area, in which a wall of glass cubes is built to serve the function allowing sunlight getting through the glass wall into the living and dining area, an opportunity to enjoy natural light.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2016 in Hong Kong and finished in June 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The proposed design is a completely re-puzzled with small individual rooms. An open kitchen with a bar and two stools is located in centre of living area and dining area to enlarge the openness of the house.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Referencing the mood and feel of the time in sunrise and sunset, the materials palette is conceptualised to a warm and cosy wooden furniture, creating a dialogue with external trees. By considering the humid weather, a wooden pattern ceramic tiles flooring. The two layers of full height sliding glass doors is built to increase flexibility and safety concerns.
CHALLENGE: Colour in rooms and areas are different for functions and activities. A pearl white colour paint and kitchen cabinet was used on the central to further correspond the natural daylight outside. A pastel pink was used in master bedroom to allow relax environment.
