DESIGN NAME: Anibo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Autism Tactile Training
INSPIRATION: We found one of the most serious problems of autism is tactile disorders. The limited number of aids people can find on the market require the parents to assist. Unfortunately not many parents have time to participate in the training all along. Based on the facts that autistic children are lack of tactile rehabilitation training aids, we propose Anibo. It introduces therapy into their daily life by the combination of training and shower which creates new way for tactile rehabilitation training.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Anibo is a safe and useful bath toy for autistic children with high tactile sensitivity. A set of Anibo is a collection of 3 individual products. Each product controls a different level of water yield and speed in order to provide advanced training and feedback information. The smallest one is for children and the others are for parents to facilitate the interaction. Putting safety first when designing a product for children, we use the food-grade silicone and design a charging cradle.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Press the water suction button on the top of the Anibo and put the toy under the water, it will fill the cistern then float up. The outlet button which is next to the intake button controls two levels of water yield. Press once for level 1 and twice for 2. Different water flow will take different tactile sensory stimulation. The water intake is under Anibo’s tail when the water outlet is on Anibo’s belly.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in August 2018 in Beijing, China and finished in February 2019 in Beijing, China.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We used to be with autistic children, their parents and their teachers and we found that the tactile disorder is a common phenomenon among autistic children when there is few things for them to train and use. From this research, it became clear that there is a need for autistic children with over-high tactile sensitivity. The design of this bath toy attempts to fulfill this need.
CHALLENGE: Design an training toy for autism children with high tactile sensitivity and their family to promote children’s conception of skin touching by fragmented training.
