| DESIGN NAME: Abstract World PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wall Art INSPIRATION: Inspiration behind the design originally came from the need to create an art piece from recycled metal, hand crafted and designed to embody an abstract vision of a deconstruction design style of the world. An abstract world without borders fitted the nature of our clients business made from recycled metal casted into sheets that are manually bent to perfection to create a 3D version of a simplified abstract map of the world, hand tempered and painted with the raw color of steel to magnify the feel of industrialism. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Abstract world is a super sized lighted wall art map of the world. Its is a handcrafted wall art suitable to add to the decor of a contemporary office or commercial space where large walls need to be decorated. Made from cast iron it weighs 130 pounds and takes 12 weeks to create. The embedded lighting gives it a distinctive floating feel. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Abstract World is a customised lighted decorative art piece. The map is customised as per specs provided of wall and space to be placed. The map comes with 6 wall clocks indicating time zones for 6 countries with letters made from stainless steel. The placement of clocks on top of or on either side of the map are also determined by wall size. The map is shipped in package of 13 pieces along with an installation guide and maintenance manual. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Made in Cairo Egypt the manufacturing process takes 12 weeks. The design process itself took 6 weeks. Four maps were sold to offices in Cairo, Singapore, Sydney, Dallas and Dubai with two more orders in the making. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The lighted design is crafted in Egypt from cast iron with led lights around the rim. The product is handcrafted and manually painted. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The map is customisable depending on wall size. Weighing 130 pounds it is around 157 inches long and 78 inches height sitting 2.7 inches away from the wall. The map is a lighted art piece featuring embedded soft white lighting around the edges. The map is made-up of 13 pieces and comes with hanging clocks indicating time zones for six countries to be selected by the Client to be placed on top of or on either side of the map. Country names are made from stainless steel. For clients outside of Egypt the art piece is packaged and shipped with installation instructions. TAGS: World Map, Wall Art, Metal Art, Wall Decor, Metal Craft, Abstract, Office Design, Commercial Design, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Several hand sketches was drawn to maintain the borderline and look putting into consideration that abstracting the continents does not distort the positioning of certain countries since the design of the abstract version of the world has no distinctive geographical boundaries between countries. A scale 1 to 5 model was prepared from cardboard to study the proportions and visualise the protrusion coordinates and repeated several times to reach the desired effect. CHALLENGE: This art piece had several obstacles along the way, starting with the design where the concept of abstracting the continents , countries , shorelines without demolishing the shapes and distinctive positioning for each country was an obstacle that required repetitive trials to reach the final design .After which casting the recycled steel and hand tempering it to the broken-lines design with specified coordinates of protrusions and gouges was another impediment .The result was that each piece of the metal art piece was proportional, abstract modern and industrial as well as maintaining authenticity and uniqueness.
