DESIGN NAME: Raw
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Radiator
INSPIRATION: We often draw an x to cancel something, but also to point out where to place, drill, reach, etc. It is a sign but at the same time it does not add a too specific flavor. All these factors made me believe in its aesthetic potential, so I thought to use it to make a large object looking lightweight despite its dimensions. Its design is intended to integrate with the architectural project and to get a radiator that does not look as it is expected to be and let the wall visible.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Raw is a family of radiators for Brem, built using curved and welded pipes in a boxy shape, featuring a diagonal cross in the centre. The goal of the design is to be iconic, visually neutral, almost raw and related to architectural elements such a construction structure, scaffolding and shelving units. It is available in different elements and sizes, in vertical or horizontal layout. Thanks to the framework structure, any single unit can act as a heated towel rail.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The way that such a product can involve the user is mainly by the choice among all the versions and combinations. The final result can be significantly affected by the choice of the same element repeated, or by adding the rhythm and visual movement of different shapes. Towels can be placed everywhere along the framework structure.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The first 2D concept has be shown to Brem on December 2017, in Osio Sotto (BG); the product has been developed and was exhibited in April at Eurobagno 2018, Salone del Mobile.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The entire radiator is made of steel, curved and welded.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The single elements are available in three shapes (square and two different rectangles) and in two main sizes (width 50 or 60 cm), for more than 50 combinations.
Pipes: 25 mm diameter.
Available in both hydraulic and electric versions.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Since the beginning I had in mind an object that looked like something missing. The boxy shape together with the two crossing pipes satisfied this goal. I was also interested to obtain a three dimensional product, visually empty and lightweight, with a neutral aesthetics, able to decorate by complex cast shadows, like the principles behind architectural structures. I wanted to pay homage to the Company’s pay off: Radiators for architecture, by a product easy to be placed in a wide range of environments and styles, depending of the combinations and finishes.
CHALLENGE: I checked the possibility to create modular system, by just two standard elements in each corner, one for squares and one for rectangles, varying final dimension by the length of the pipes. This solution has been discarded due to production difficulties and costs. The production process developed by the company, however, allows maximum flexibility for custom projects.
