| DESIGN NAME: Kube PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lounge INSPIRATION: The site fascinate a feel of walking from inside a house (enclosed area) to a backyard (terrace) where we could organise parties with live music and introduce different artist for performances .A potentially designed space resembles a raw open backyard introducing different artists for a variety of events such as stage performances,musical concerts, fashion photography, etc right outside own house. Thus we imagined how the public gathering space would feel if it had developed organically over time. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design evolved from the romantic ruins of the site to achieve a space in nature with optimizing the usage of the space as per the sun movement. A socializing platform hosting any age group from morning yoga,performing artist ,workshop ,party. Open planning and courtyards with loose furniture helps to modify it's layout as per the event. Ambience adds a uniqueness as it changes from brunch to night musical evening, day time space varies from the dim lit evening with a blanket of the starry night. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The zoning is governed by an existing grid beams and columns. To break the 40 meter length we introduced brick walls to create volumetric spaces to carve seating’s or visual frames .The old worn doors and windows strategically created transition into each space. The linear space spills out into open spaces, courtyards, and central bar, open kitchen like functions which keep all users engaged and creates nodes for interactions. Also these nodes get transformed into performance and interaction spaces. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2017 in Mumbai and finished in July 2017 in Mumbai and was exhibited in Festival of Architecture and Interior design in August 2018 and Wade in June 2018 . |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design and materials is a raw pallet of construction materials adding a rugged character to the constant wear and tear in the city temperatures .Keeping the design approach sustainable, we visioned this aspect in relation to maintenance, sourcing from local artisans, recycling of materials, adding adequate plants and planning the spaces to maximize the wind flow to achieve temperature drop in the space. Raw – Concrete, Brick, metal and wood along with some old doors and windows maintained in its raw procured form, 8”x8” raw and unfinished 3d Concrete blocks are designed and customized by local craftsman's. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 800 sq.mt TAGS: lounge, rooftop restaurant, kube lounge, hospitality design, recreation, restaurant spaces, restaurant and bar design, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Experimenting with the materials like concrete cubes, cement screens with the local craftsmen and manufacturing by using local techniques escorted in cost efficiency. The doors and the wooden louvered shutters were been sourced from the scarps of the old houses. Sourcing the lights and metal works from the junkyard and modifying as per design. CHALLENGE: The design and materials is a raw pallet of construction materials adding a rugged character to the constant wear and tear in the city temperatures .The substantial challenge was incorporating the existing beam column grid as a design element accompanied by its restrictive height obstacle of 8’6”. Site being in a linear space the Zoning becomes an important part of the project and understanding the circulation pattern. As it’s a open roof top lounge the materials play an essential part. So the material palette was of natural raw materials making them look elegant with time. NAME: Saga Design Architects PROFILE: SAGA Design Architects founded in 2011 is a Mumbai based design firm -young designers who engage themselves in carrying out creative solutions in areas of Architecture, Urban Design, Interior Design, Furniture Design.MayurGujare and Deval Shah founded the Studio with the belief that “Design has the power to transform life by creative visions”. MayurGujare (B.Arch, KRVIA) a Gold Medalist for the best design dissertation from KamlaRaheja Institute for Architecture (KRVIA) has been honored with the best research and best from the National institute for Advanced Studies of Architecture (NIASA Awards 2009). He worked with Architect Prof. Christopher Charles Benninger (Pune) where he got experience in large scale architecture projects and a chance to develop his skills in design and urban areas. He recently was awarded a Runner up for a hospitality project in FOAID 2018. Deval Shah (B.ArchKamlaRahejaVidyanidhi Institute for Architecture) a Design Diva 2017award winner at Elle Decor Decowood Design Diva and a Design Diva Top 100 2018 has also won a young woman architect of the year at WADE 2018. She has trained under Mr. KamuIyer and has got immense knowledge on small to large detailings and management of sites. We believe that Architecture is a response to fundamental human needs – a way of organizing space while meeting practical demands creating spaces that define the USER and his area of dominance. Our designs are a collaboration of art and architecture - a mode of framing a communication in undefined boundaries, welding the inside outside while binding the senses and desire.
