DESIGN NAME: DiamArt
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fabric
INSPIRATION: DiamArt, after years of study on rigid planes, wants to give to its iconic micro diamond surface the possibility to reach new shapes and applications by creating a flexible material where the diamond surface can be modeled but be resistant at the same time. A deep research in diamond technique applications and special polymers allowed us to create a bright and flexible surface, capable of reproducing forms, and giving shine and luxury sensations to the design creations.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A fabric covered with an expanse of micro-diamonds, with a velvety and shiny effect. DiamArt introduces to the market for the first time the possibility of using a flexible support for its iconic diamond surface. The micro diamond fabric has a density of 0.06ct / cm2 of natural micro-diamonds, verified by IGI – Istituto Gemmologico Italiano. The beauty of the diamond is enhanced by the softness of the fabric that allows designers, architects and creatives to give new shapes and lights to their ideas.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The DiamArt micro diamond fabric is created in sheets from which can be obtained inserts and pieces to apply on any creations. The micro-diamonds are embedded but touchable. Therefore the surface is resistant and brilliant at the same time. Diamond is a very strong material so we use waterjet cut to create shapes with our special fabric. The application is simple because the material is also sewable and can be applied to other fabrics and objects. The use of DiamArt fabric can be various: from high precious details to unique bright surfaces. It’s the real very first material made of micro diamonds for the design community.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2018 in Verona and will be officially presented in 2019 in Milano during the Brera Design Week (Salone del Mobile 2019)

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The DiamArt main feature is the surface composition: a mixture of diamond powders with a brilliant and elegant effect and a natural diamond density of 0.06ct / cmq (verified by IGI – Istituto Gemmologico Italiano). The final compound is made of micro natural diamonds, uv pigments, man-made diamond crystals and epoxy resin. The micro-diamond composition lies on a polyurethane fabric, specifically studied for the best adhesion of the gems. Particularly, uv pigmentation technologies are used to create the final color of the surface (the different colors are reflected outside the surface thanks to the diamond transparency) and waterjet cutting technologies are used to obtain the desired shapes. Considering the hardness and strength of the diamond, this last technology is the only one usable. The most important technology, however, is the adhesion of gems technique: a high-pressure process able to embed gems with an average size of 0.15mm on large surfaces, while at the same time keep them touchable, and give to the material resistance and brilliance.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: DiamArt micro diamond fabric is produced in sheets of 250 x 250 mm with a thickness of 1.75mm. Custom shapes are created by waterjet cut. Technical aspects were analyzed by expert laboratories (see documentation).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After years dedicated to rigid micro diamond surfaces we wanted to create something new and give new possibilities in shapes and expressions. The aim was to give more flexibility to the material in order to expand the potential applications but keep at the same time the resistance reached with plane surfaces. Thanks to an accumulated experience and many experiments we managed to create this new flexible product with our iconic density of natural diamonds.
CHALLENGE: DiamArt, after years of study on rigid planes, wants its iconic micro diamond surface to have new shapes and applications by creating a flexible material. DiamArt micro diamond fabric can be modeled but be resistant at the same time. A deep research in diamond technique applications and special polymers allow us to create a bright and flexible surface, giving shine and luxury to the creations.
