DESIGN NAME: Opulent
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cooking Utensil Collection
INSPIRATION: Users are looking for kitchen appliances that make bold statements and many kitchen designers have been redesigning the kitchen to suit user interests. Though kitchen appliances have been changing along with this trend, the cooking utensil experience hasn't been fully explored. Our intent was to create a distinctive cooking utensil experience that follows the emerging contemporary trends and trending CMF: matte finish, dark color palette and metallic accents.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This utensil stand creates a new cooking experience, it not only gives the user an easier way to store their utensils but also creates a distinctive cooking experience. Rather than laying the utensils on the stove top, counter or spoon rest, the user could lay or hang their utensils on this stand. The plate, designed as an accompanying piece to this cooking utensil collection, lays delicately upon the utensil stand creating a more elaborate experience.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As people prepare to cook, the user's most used cooking utensils would be hanging by magnets from the utensil stand. Within reaching distance, the user could easily grab the needed utensils off. When not in use, users could either rehang the utensils off the stand or rest them within the accompanying plate that rests on the stand. Either resting position would allow them to drip directly into the plate. Once done cooking, the user could easily wash the used utensils and plate. Due to the stand being created out of Polycarbonate, user could see through the stand at any angle allowing easier use.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Slow Food Movement has been rising due to its cultural uniqueness and created experience. The Slow Food Movement encourages discovering different foods, understanding their origins and production and taking time to enjoy the food in all aspects, including creation. The fresh meal kit delivery service is expected to grow from 1 billion in 2015 to 10 billion US by 2020. These fresh meal kits include the ingredients needed to make daily meals with recipes included for convenience. According to surveys, 41% of respondents have problems with the way they store their cooking utensils.
CHALLENGE: Our society has been fast phases. As a result, fast food and fast fashion have been in a main stream. However, people have started feeling fast movement was not the best solution and looking back our past in order to find solution. It was difficult for us to find research statistic data to support our design direction. Also, we have spent a good amount of time to explore and refine the concept that works. Throughout the research journey, we were inspired by insights from people we interviewed.
