PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewelry
INSPIRATION: The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen, Germany. It has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 2001, and is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
It is considered an architectural and technical masterpiece, earning it a reputation as the "most beautiful coal mine in the world"
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A jewelry collection featuring geometry as the main character. Pieces inspired by the shapes and textures of the old charcoal mine in Zollverein, Germany. The steel beams based architecture, the decadence of the industrial complex, the red oxide covering it all with the passing of time, have been translated into pieces of great singularity and rough beauty. Manufactured in stainless steel with electrostatic paint, the pieces from this collection have become a hallmark of Iker Ortiz's identity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Portable jewelry pieces. Earrings, ring, bracelet and necklace.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2013 in Mexico City and Iker Ortiz keeps adding nowadays new designs to compliment the collection.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Stainless steel with electrostatic paint pieces.
Laser cut stainless steel pieces, laser welded and finally painted with electrostatic paint.
Handmade welded, handmade painted and handmade finished.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Type of research: Physicall visit to the coal mine in Essen, Germany and in site museum.
Research objectives: Creating a jewelry collection inspired on the geometry, lines, shapes and architecture of the site.
Methodology: Research, drawing and designing, defining materials, manufacture of pieces (constructional drawings, laser cut, laser welding, painting, finish)
Research Tools Used: Collect information about architecture
Participants: Iker Ortiz
Results: Jewelry collection including earrings, rings, bracelets and necklaces (portable pieces)
CHALLENGE: The hardest part was to define materials and achieve the desired visual results.
Achieve a visual finish similar to oxide (but that doesn't stain) and achieving pieces with texture.
The selected one, stainless steel with electrostatic paint.
